Faith’s Hiking Journey

From Hobby to Purpose

Dr Faith Mwende on a summit

Mountain climbing is a physically and intellectually difficult sport that involves mental control, strength, endurance, agility, and balance. Tracing the origins of one’s hobbies can be challenging, and, like my hiking experiences, I cannot recall precisely when what was once a hobby became a passion. This, however, can be attributed to my upbringing.

Mountaineering has given me unmatched confidence, especially after completing a summit, which has been humbling and daunting for me. Preparation, energy, attention, and devotion that culminate in the summit are intangible life lessons that generate purpose, skill, and discipline to achieve goals. These attributes necessitate mental attentiveness as the mind is put to work, and it is on this basis that I plan to raise mental health awareness in women and youth as I embark on my journey to summit Mount Everest.

With support from the Kenya Wildlife Service, I have summited Mt. Kilimanjaro (Africa’s highest mountain) twice, Mt. Nyirangongo in DRC, and numerous small mountains in Kenya, including Mt. Satima, Elephant Hills, Kipipiri, Rurimeria, Mt. Longonot, Mt. Kilimambogo, Mt. Suswa, Kiou and Kayata Hills, among others in Makueni County. I’ve also climbed high-altitude peaks such as Mt. Elgon, Mt. Meru in Tanzania, and Mt. Kenya (7 times). To celebrate my doctoral achievement, I challenged myself to go beyond the well-known Mt. Everest base camp and ascend to the Chola Pass. I’m thrilled by the prospect of becoming the first Kenyan woman to attempt to scale Mt. Everest.
